Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun has a viewing suggestion for potential recruits who might be near a television Wednesday. Tune into the NBA draft, where he expects to see a string of Huskies called to the podium.[details]
Strengths: Armstrong has great size for either the power forward or center position, complemented by a terrific wingspan and excellent athletic ability. He is very quick in his movements, and is capable of springing off the floor repeatedly with a nice vertical leap. Offensively, Armstrong is raw, but shows sparks of potential at times. Being a very young, late-blooming 21-year-old senior, he is still considered to have a large upside to continue to improve, and shows the right intangibles to lead you to believe that he will reach his potential.
Weaknesses: Despite being a senior, Armstrong doesn't have a huge body of work to fall back on. He first played a major contributing role for UConn as a senior, and still only averaged nine points and six rebounds per game. His lack of strength has been the main thing holding him back, and its indeed hampered all parts of his game, including his back-to-the-basket game, rebounding, and in terms of holding his spot on the block on the defensive end. He often lacks toughness and assertiveness, and is still working on shedding the soft tag - both physically and mentally.
