They say athletes have to have short memories to succeed and that was certainly the case for the Washington State University men's hoop team. A mere week after going ice-cold against USC in the second half, Wazzu was on fire in the desert against the Arizona State Sun Devils and their zone defense as they pulled off a 65-55 upset victory over ASU in Tempe. With the win, Wazzu moves to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

Freshman Klay Thompson did the most damage to the Devils as he torched ASU's zone defense for a career-high 28 points - with 24 coming on torrid 8-for-10 shooting from behind the arc. When Thompson was not hitting from downtown Tempe, senior center Aron Baynes was having his way, adding a season-high 22 points in the paint. Senior guard Taylor Rochestie also got into double digits with 11 points.

The Cougars uncharacteristically allowed the Sun Devils to score 30 points in the first half as ASU built a 30-27 halftime lead. But the Cougars cracked down hard on the Devils in the second half - holding ASU to only eight shots in the second half - a paltry 28%. Simultaneously, Thompson was still hitting his threes and Wazzu was, once again, money from the line as they hit the final seven of their points from the free throw line to clinch the win.

"Big Daddy" Baynes also led the Cougars with nine rebounds while Rochestie had four assists and freshman DeAngelo Casto blocked two shots. Thompson's three spree is a freshman record.

Wazzu's next game is against Arizona at 11 am on Saturday, January 31 in Tucson.
